Alternaria sp.

PATHOGENICITY: Commonly considered a contaminant, and a common cause of extrinsic asthma. Occasional agents of onychomycosis, of ulcerated cutaneous infection, and of chronic sinusitis. Rare cases of deep infection have also been reported in the immunocompromised patient. More chronic cases may develop pulmonary emphysema.

RATE OF GROWTH:  Rapid Growth, 4-5 days.

COLONY MORPHOLOGY:

MICROSCOPIC MORPHOLOGY:  Conidia dimensions are 18-83 x 7-18 um. Spores are of the larger size 20 - 200 microns in length and 7 - 18 microns in width. Teardrop shaped.
