A water disaster is one of those hideous adversities that nature has in store for man. These water disasters often take the form of a floods and cyclones. A flood is the accumulation of a vast expanse of water that has the potential of submerging land. It is the temporary covering of land by a stretch of water. As water aids the spread of germs and bacteria, there is umpteen numbers of chances for diseases to spread. The entire harvest in lost with the flood. This leaves the survivors with hunger and extreme suffering. As the flood recedes, the silt from the river is deposited to the local soil that makes it difficult for the inhabitants to continue farming. There is also loss of trees that cannot bear the intensity of the flood rush.

The economic crisis that the victims suffer is intense. There is economic hardship due to the rebuilding costs and shortage of food makes the prices hit the zenith. The common man is unable to buy food. There is a drastic fall in the level of tourism and thus the income from external sources also declines.

Such is the intensity and after effects of a flood! The affected people take years together to come back to the minimum level of economic status. In areas where floods occur frequently, emergency measures like floating tubes and sandbags should be kept handy. Building of dams is the traditional way of controlling floods of high magnitude.
