Emericella quadrilineata belongs
to the Emericella group. Emericella is a fungus, an
ascomycete that multiplies by sexual reproduction with
genetic exchange. The Emericella species are known as
the sexual states of the Aspergillus species, particularly
Aspergillus nidulans. This fungi species is also closely
related to the Eurotium group, which also has Aspergillus
anamorphs.
Emericella quadrilineata is commonly found in tropical
and subtropical climates. Outdoors, it is isolated
from plants, plant material and soil. Indoors, it
can be isolated from the likes of building materials
and even house dust. It can also be found in food
products, as the Emericella species usually cause
food spoilage.
Like all others that belong to the Emericella group,
Emericella quadrilineata grows in a rapid rate. Its
colony color can differ: it can be gray, green, purple
or yellow. The colony also usually has a velvety texture.
This fungus is allergenic and may cause asthmatic
reactions.
