Candida zeylanoides is a kind of
yeast that belongs to the Candida species. While it
has been determined as a pathogenic type, cases are
relatively rare. No toxic diseases have been associated
with this yeast. Individuals who are most at risk for
infections caused by this yeast are those who are immunocompromised
and immunocompetent. The yeast can cause arthritis,
endocarditis and fungemia in immunocompromised people,
while it can cause nail and skin infections in immunocompetent
persons. Candida zeylanoides has also been implicated
for sepsis.
Candida zeylanoides is a rapidly-growing allergenic
yeast usually isolated from soil, water, meat and
humans. However, some cases revealed that it can also
been found in the skin of animals such as dogs and
dolphins. The colonies of this fungi appear smooth,
with white to yellowish color. Because the yeast is
susceptible to the anti-fungal drug amphotericin B
and azoles, treatment of infections is without difficulty.
