Candida guilliermondii

A - B - C - D - E - Next

Candida guilliermondii belongs to the fungi species known as Candida. The colonies of this kind of fungi are white or cream colored and the appearance is smooth and yeast-like. It can be found in human skin and nails (particularly in healthcare workers), marine environments, municipal wastes and sewage sludge, animal faeces, fish, leather, beer and buttermilk.

Candida guilliermondii threatens human health because it causes a number of health conditions. This particular species is associated with many deep-seated (and mostly cutaneous) infections, specifically affecting cancer patients and IV drug users. However, healthy individuals can also be affected if they come in contact with the fungi. Some of the health problems that result from Candida guilliermondii include cutaneous candidiasis, endocarditis, meningitis and onychomycosis. Though there had been one case where the fungi caused aplastic anemia, systemic infections are rare. This is one of the select fungi that can grow in blood culture.
