Bipolaris spicifera belongs to the
dematiaceous Bipolaris species of fungi. It is usually
found in soil and plants such as grasses. This fast
growing kind of fungi has a soft texture and gray-brown
color. As for the colony, the color changes into dark
olive to black on the surface; on the other side, the
color is dark brown to black.
Certain Bipolaris species are pathogenic, and Bipolaris
spicifera is one of them. This allergenic fungi is
most recognized as the cause of phaeohyphomycosis,
a group of fungi-caused infections that result in
pigmented hyphae and yeast-like cells in tissue. Bipolaris
spicifera is usually blamed for sinusitis, endarteritis, endocarditis,
fungemia, keratitis, peritonitis, as well as cutaneous
and pulmonary infections in healthy, immunosuppressed
or immunocompetent individuals. Inhalation of this
fungi can result in the growth of masses in the sinuses.
The polyps that develop due to the growth have to
be removed by surgery.
