Aspergillus versicolor

Aspergillus versicolor is a widely distributed mold that grows well on substrates that are slow-decaying and are exposed to humidy. It is very common in cold regions and cultivated soils but rarely in forests. This species has been isolated from different substrates and habitats that include, audio visual, automotive and electronic components; war equipments; leather; optical instruments; stone; mural and frescoes; paper; rubber; synthetic materials; textile; atmospheric dust; and food products among others.

Aspergillus versicolor is toxic and pathogenic to both humans and animals. It is associated with ear different conditions, including ear infections, onychomycosis, and invasive aspergillosis. It can also cause skin infections in burn victims. The aflatoxins it synthesizes are also found to be responsible for several cancers.
